Mining of minerals depends broadly on availability of mineral resources, economic viability, demand of the market etc. The Central Government has enunciated the new National Mineral Policy, 2008 which envisages streamlining and simplifying the procedures in grant of mineral concessions in order to attract investment into mining sector.
Geological Survey of India (GSI) has conducted regional exploration for gold in the States of Rajasthan, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttaranchal. GSI has also conducted search for kimberlite/lamproite rocks, the source rock for diamond.
The production of diamond is from Madhya Pradesh only.

किम्बरली प्रोसेस सर्टिफिकेशन स्कीम का उद्धाटन
केपीसीएस में 74 देशों का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले 48 सदस्य हैं जिसमें यूरोपीय समुदाय और उनके सदस्यों का प्रतिनिधत्व एक सदस्य करता है। भारत इसके संस्थापक सदस्य देशों में से एक है। केपीसीएस की अध्यक्षता वार्षिक रूप से सदस्य देशों के बीच घूमती रहती है।
केंद्रीय वाणिज्य एवं उद्योग मंत्री श्री कमलनाथ 03नवंबर, 2008 को यहां किम्बरली प्रोसेस सर्टिफिकेशन स्कीम (केपीसीएस) के पूर्ण अधिवेशन का उद्धाटन करेंगे। केपीसीएस एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय प्रमाणन एजेंसी है जो कच्चे हीरे के व्यापार को विनियमित करती है।
India as Chair of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) for the calendar year 2008 is hosting the Plenary Meeting in New Delhi during 3-6 November, 2008.
Background : The Kimberley process started when Southern African diamond-producing states met in Kimberley, South Africa, in May 2000, to discuss ways to stop the trade in 'conflict diamonds' and ensure that diamond purchases were not funding violence.
In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution supporting the creation of an international certification scheme for rough diamonds. By November 2002, negotiations between governments, the international diamond industry and civil society organisations resulted in the creation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) . The KPCS document sets out the requirements for controlling rough diamond production and trade. The KPCS entered into force in 2003, when participating countries started to implement its rules.
