Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, will be inaugurating the Plenary Meeting of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) here on 3rd November, 2008. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is an international Certification Scheme that regulates trade in rough diamonds. It aims to prevent the flow of conflict diamonds, while helping to protect legitimate trade in rough diamonds.
KPCS currently has 48 member representing 74 countries, with the European Community and its Member States counting as an individual participant. India is one of the founding members of the Scheme. In addition, the World Diamond Council, representing diamond industry, and civil society organisations Global Witness, Partnership-Africa Canada also participate in the KP and have played a major role since its inception.
Chair of KPCS rotates annually between the participant nations. KP Chair oversees the implementation of the scheme, operations of the Working Groups and Committees (viz., Statistics, Monitoring, Diamond Experts, Artisanal and Alluvial, Participation Committee, Selection Committee and Committee of Rules and Procedure) and general administration of the Scheme. India has assumed charge of the Chair for the period 1-1-2008 to 31-12-2008. Intersessional Meeting of KPCS was hosted by India during 17-19 June, 2008
