Army Band Concert at Harbaksh Stadium Delhi Cantt

The Armed Forces all over the world have deep rooted martial traditions, martial music being one of the most prominent such traditions. In earlier times, martial music roused and inspired feelings of courage and valour among soldiers in the battle.

A special Army Band Concert was conducted at Harbaksh Stadium, Delhi Cantt on 01 Nov 08 during Chief's Conclave. Mrs Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, the Hon'ble President of India was the Chief Guest. During the Army Band Concert a CD on Military Music and Coffee Table Book on Military Bands was also released.

Present day bands have evolved from such old and venerable traditions. Today, the Military Band and Pipes and Drums are ceremonial in function but play an important role in instilling a sense of pride in all spheres of Military Life. Martial music also adds a special dimension to military rituals and ceremonies and perpetuates martial traditions. Indeed, the rendition of martial music never fails to foster discipline and raise the morale of troops.

The fusion of the Western and Indian musical traditions, although extremely difficult to accomplish, was achieved quite successfully by the overall coordinator and Chief Conductor, Mr SR Kandpal, Director of Music and his team of musicians. It resulted in a fine blend of western military music with Indian music. Musical instruments such as Sitar, Sarod, Santoor and Tabla will be seen playing alongside traditional western instruments during this Band Concert. Several popular Indian folk tunes and Ragas have also been successfully incorporated by the composers and the number of such tunes continues to grow.

One hundred and fifty two (152) selected musicians from all Regtl Centres/Battalion Bands and from the Army's Military Music Wing have been trained for performances under the regular and effective supervision of Director of Music.

Many of these experienced musicians have earlier performed at International Martial Music Competitions/Tattoos at various countries like Sweden, Japan, Malaysia, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Chile.

The Band Concert at Harbaksh Stadium offered a rare opportunity for the connoisseur of music to get a first hand experience of range and quality of Military Musicians. Their expertise in playing western musical instruments and successful
